BECOMING MI™ CODING LAB · AN AMIGA SERVICE

See how MI shows up in your conversations.

Turn a recorded conversation into specific feedback you can use.

An AMIGA reviewer trained in MITI or MICA codes your recording, identifies strengths and development priorities, and gives you a clear focus for practice. Choose written feedback or add a 30-minute consultation.

FOR INDIVIDUALS

Hear your practice more clearly.

Notice patterns that are difficult to hear while you are in a conversation. Understand what you are already doing well and choose one or two useful priorities for practice, coaching, or supervision.

FOR ORGANIZATIONS

Connect your investment with everyday practice.

Explore whether MI skills are showing up after training and where further support would help. An agreed sampling approach and repeated reviews can inform coaching, supervision, and implementation decisions.

Coding describes the conversations reviewed. To evaluate wider impact, combine it with your organization’s implementation measures and client outcomes.

How MITI and MICA guide your review

Both assess how MI is used in a recorded conversation and help identify what to practice next. Each has its own criteria and scoring system.

MITI 4.2.1

Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity

A measure of MI fidelity: how closely the conversation reflects MI. It combines four overall ratings—partnership, empathy, cultivating change talk and softening sustain talk—with counts of practitioner behaviors, including questions and reflections. It supports structured feedback, supervision and research.

MICA 3.3

Motivational Interviewing Competency Assessment

A coding and coaching tool focused on skill development. It combines question and reflection counts with ratings of responses to change and sustain talk and five MI intentions: partnership, evoking, guiding, expressing empathy, and supporting autonomy and activation.

Unsure which to choose? Select “Help me choose” when submitting. If your training or organization specifies an instrument or version, tell us. We agree the tool before coding; the same feedback and consultation options are available with either.

Research behind the tools

MITI: A peer-reviewed 2016 study by Moyers and colleagues examined MITI 4 using 50 clinical recordings and reported preliminary reliability and validity findings.

MICA: A 2018 report by Washington State University researchers on the developers’ website examined 2,274 sessions. Its coder-agreement and MITI-comparison studies involved six recordings and six experienced MICA coders. It reported strong agreement, with the small comparison sample limiting generalization. That report predates the 3.3 manual.

These studies concern the instruments. Consistent service delivery also requires trained reviewers, calibration and a clear sampling approach.

What your results can tell you

Your report describes the sample reviewed and identifies practical learning priorities. MITI and MICA scores are not interchangeable. A single review does not establish competence across all your work, confer certification, or demonstrate client outcomes.

For team or repeated reviews, agree the instrument, version and sampling method in advance. This makes findings more useful for supervision and decisions about further support.

One place for your request, recording link, and report.

  1. Buy directly. Choose your option and pay through Shopify. No Lab account or intake form is needed before checkout.
  2. Submit after checkout. Sign in to the Lab, enter your Shopify order number, and share a restricted recording link. Keep the recording in your approved storage and grant AMIGA access. The Lab does not upload or copy the recording.
  3. Receive your coding and feedback. AMIGA confirms the reviewer and delivery date, then returns your report to your private request.
  4. Put the feedback to work. Use your practice priorities, or arrange the included 30-minute consultation from the same request.

Use an authorized practice or client conversation about a specific change the person is considering. Our standard service covers one continuous 20-minute sample. MITI recommends random segment selection; MICA also allows brief, complete conversations. Contact us before purchasing a different length or format. For team reviews, agree how samples will be selected in advance. Follow your organization’s recording and sharing requirements. The Coding Lab explains supported storage services, permissions, and report details before you purchase.
